How to Accomplish Puppy House Training
If you have acquired a new puppy, one of the first items on your agenda will be puppy house training. How will you get this house breaking task accomplished?
Decide where you will keep the pet in your home. Purchase a kennel or crate that will fit into this area along with a leash and collar that will fit your dog.
At first, your puppy will need to stay in the crate unless you are able to provide supervision. When you take him or her out of the crate, immediately put on the leash and go outside so that the pup establishes this routine. Puppies will generally need to be taken outside about every two hours.
Anytime that your pet is outside of the crate and not on a leash, keep careful watch. Have the leash handy, and immediately take the puppy outside if she starts to squat or circle in an area. Also, watch for the pup to go towards a door as she learns to signal to you that she wants to go outside.
Whenever the puppy uses the bathroom outside, be generous with your praise. Dogs respond to enthusiasm and will want to do what you are asking. If your dog has an accident inside the house, do not punish her. Instead, clean up the mess with an enzyme cleaner so that the smell won't linger and cause your puppy to seek out that particular spot again.
Housebreaking is a process that can take weeks or even months for the puppy to master. Patience with accidents and praise when the puppy eliminates outside will make the house training process successful.
